What says summertime sun more than sweet and juicy Orr’s Farm Market peaches? Whether it’s enjoying them straight out of the market, in a freshly baked pie, or summertime peach ice cream; Orr’s Farm Market peaches are a summertime staple. And we are lucky to have them this year! A couple of southern states like Georgia and the Carolina’s suffered close to a total loss of peaches this year. We’re feeling blessed at Orr’s to have a crop that looks so delectable on our trees.

Our Semi-Freestone peaches are here, and we think they’ll stick around for the rest of the month, while our Freestone peaches will start around July 24 (so mark your calendars!). We expect Orr’s Farm Market peaches to remain in season through mid-September. Our peaches are sweet, juicy and will definitely tantalize your taste buds, but there’s also a bonus: making peaches a regular guest to your diet this summer bring advantages to your health.

Did you know peaches are one of the largest fruit crops in the United States? That’s great news as they provide a lot of nutrients with few calories and no fat.

Contest-Winning Peach Ice Cream


2 cups half-and-half cream

3 – ½ cups of sugar

¾ teaspoon salt

6 eggs, lightly beaten

4 cups heavy whipping cream

2 teaspoons vanilla extract

6 to 8 medium peaches, peeled and sliced


  1. In a large saucepan, heat half-and-half to 175 degrees; stir in sugar and salt until dissolved. Whisk a small amount of hot cream mixture into the eggs. Return all to the pan, whisking constantly. Cook and stir over low heat until the mixture reaches at least 160 degrees and coats the back of a metal spoon.
  2. Remove from the heat. Cool quickly by placing pan in a bowl of ice water; stir for 2 minutes. Stir in whipping cream and vanilla. Press plastic wrap onto surface of custard. Refrigerate for several hours or overnight.
  3. Place peaches in a blender, cover and process until pureed. Stir into the custard. Fill the cylinder of ice cream freezer two-thirds full; freeze according to manufacturer’s directions.
  4. Refrigerate remaining mixture until ready to freeze, stirring before freezing each batch. Allow to ripen in ice cream freezer of firm up in the refrigerator freezer for 2-4 hours before serving. Yield: about 3 quarts

Farming for the Future

Farming has been the foundation of our family for over 60 years, but not only is it important to us, it’s crucial to the members of our community. As people with a passion for our land and the community it serves, we want to provide the most ethically sourced products from our fields.

In the world of farming today there are three big techniques: integrated pest management, no-till farming, and permaculture. At Orr’s we use “Integrated Pest Management” or IPM. In order to keep our produce healthy, we need to ensure that nature’s creatures don’t destroy any of our crops. This technique focuses on the most natural ways to maintain our farmland and its crops, spraying as minimally as possible.

How do we spray sparingly? There are a few tricks of the trade:

  • Using bug traps to monitor the insect levels before spraying. If the insect number are not high enough, then we don’t spray.
  • We assist with federal government studies of invasive species. This allows us and other farms to stay ahead of the curve on harmful pests.
  • We use “reduced risk” pesticides, many of which are labeled organic.
  • We regularly collect soil samples that give us information to keep our crops growing in the cleanest purest soils.

Our take on GMO’s

Year after year, we have centered our techniques on providing our customers with the freshest and healthiest crops. This is why we can guarantee that if it’s grown on our farm, then it’s non-GMO. Since we enjoy supporting other local small businesses, there are products on our shelf that haven’t come directly from our farm. In order to minimize any confusion, all of our products are clearly labeled with its state of origin.

There’s controversy surrounding farming practices and the use of hybrid vs. genetically modified crops(GMO). Are they good or bad for you? Should I be feeding my kids these types of foods?

We tend to find this topic often misunderstood. Hybrid crops are the result of crossbreeding between two parent crops. This does not change the genetic make-up of the crop, rather just a different variation of the intended crop. This is typically done when two parent crops have ideal genes or yields. Crossbreeding can allow you to capitalize on those yields producing strong crops in high numbers.

The term GMO is a hot topic in the farming industry that’s been discussed in great detail. GMO stands for genetically modified organisms, and this practice has been used when experimenting with crops. The practice typically takes place in a laboratory with gene splicing. For example, BT Corn is corn that has been paired with a bacteria used in a pesticide. Bio-tech companies experiment with this variation of corn to include genetic make-up that will kill the pests that eat the crop. Why would this technique be relevant in the world of farming? GMO’s reduce pesticide use while increasing food production to feed an increasing world population on less farmland. Although this is an interesting method to consider, Orr’s Farm Market does not use this technique to date.

We have put a lot of thought into the farming practices we’ve adopted. Our family lives and works on the farm, eats the produce daily, and even drinks the groundwater! It’s a new season! As we gladly welcome summer at Orr’s, we know that this is perhaps the best time of year to start truly motivating ourselves to eat healthy because there are a ton of local crops and produce available during peak season. It’s easy to think about eating well, but it’s more difficult to actually do it.

But why is adopting a nutritious lifestyle so difficult?

The truth is, it’s easy to associate healthy living with exercise, but we tend to forget the importance of healthy eating to balance the equation.

When it comes to the decisions we make at meal time, what if we told you there are tricks to staying motivated and committed to a new lifestyle? With our fresh farm products and the tips below, we’ll put you on the path to eating healthy year round.

1. Find Your “Why”

First things first: you should ask yourself what the reason behind altering your eating habits is. If you have a laser focus on your reasons, you can use it to your advantage as you set goals.

And even better: a journal helps us articulate the next steps in our healthy eating journey.

4. Pay Close Attention to How You Feel

Before you go on a binge-eating bender, remember exactly what it feels like when you’re eating healthy. We promise it will feel drastically different from an unbalanced diet. When we commit to nourishing our bodies with healthy choices, we get more energy and are less likely to come down with the sniffles.

5. Start Small and Find a Partner

People say to adopt a healthy habit it takes about a month of commitment. Instead of thinking of it as simply eating healthy, the key is to think of it as adopting a healthy lifestyle. Starting small and working your way up into a more intense routine can help you build repetition. Once you’ve committed to this way of life, make sure you have someone in your life that can help motivate you to make the change.

6. Reward Yourself

 You get rewarded when you do things right. So reward yourself along the way. These rewards can serve as benchmarks that propel you into the next cycle. Just because you are working toward a new and improved you, doesn’t mean you can’t indulge every once in a while. Many food companies offer low-fat or lean versions of your favorite dishes. So instead of reaching for what you use to, reach the lean options to keep you on track.

Two of Orr’s favorite “summer” soups are Tomato Basil and Tortilla, and we love the corn chowder. Want to make it a seasonal dish? Add some shrimp to the corn chowder mix, and you’ve made quite the summer snack.

If you like to listen to your sweet tooth more than you like to hear what the doctor says, we’re sharing a favorite recipe that at least has this superfood as one of its ingredients. Try this as a Sunday treat, or bring this creation to your next backyard barbecue!

Peanut Butter and Jelly Pie


  • 1 frozen pie crust, defrosted
  • 4 c. blueberries
  • 1 c. sugar
  • 1/4 cornstarch
  • kosher salt
  • 1/2 stick melted butter
  • 1/4 c. brown sugar
  • 1/2 c. old-fashioned oats
  • 1/2 c. peanut butter
  • 2/3 c. flour
  • 1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon


  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.
  2. Toss blueberries with sugar, cornstarch and a pinch of salt. Pour mixture into pie crust.
  3. Meanwhile, make the peanut butter-oat streusel. In a medium bowl, combine butter, brown sugar, oats, peanut butter, cinnamon, and flour. Stir with a fork until you form small crumbles. Place on top of blueberry mixture.
  4. Bake until the filling is bubbly and the topping is golden brown, about 1 hour. If the streusel is browning too quickly, cover with foil.

Summer is officially in full swing! We hope you’ve made the most of it so far. It’s a season of endless options. The warmer weather makes the outdoors our living room, the land gives us a bounty of wonderful foods, and the sun sticks around a few hours longer.

This time of year is unique because enjoying it can mean packing your days to the brim or doing next to nothing. Most of us spend our time somewhere in the middle, making a point to both relax and plan fun activities. If you’re looking for a perfect in-between option, a picnic fits the bill. Picnicking is a summertime classic. It’s something people of any and every age can enjoy. Why? Because a picnic can happen anywhere and with whatever foods you like! Plus, it requires little planning, it’s inexpensive, and it’s portable.

Did you know June 18 is International Picnic Day? To celebrate, we thought we’d help you out with the two most important picnic decisions: Where to go and what to eat. Spend International Picnic Day at Orr’s! Come on down to the farm, grab your favorite fruits and veggies, spread your blanket on a patch of grass, and enjoy! All you need to do in advance is pack whatever you’d like to accompany your selections at the farm. Some good ideas include tortilla chips, whole-wheat crackers, cheese, nuts, hummus, and Greek yogurt veggie dip.

On June 18, as always, you can pick your own berries or you can check out what our market has to offer. Either way, it doesn’t get fresher than this! If you’ve never been to the farm, International Picnic Day would make for a great first visit. You can see all we have to offer while spending a relaxing afternoon with friends or family. Year in and year out, our excitement continues to build as the pick-your-own season reaches its peak. The experience and the bond it fosters between families’ embodies what we believe: growing happiness with good food.

We’re particularly excited about the pick-your-own cherry season this year after we lost last year’s crop to an unusual freeze. This year, we’re looking at the beginning of June for prime cherry picking season to begin. You and your family can enjoy our homegrown West Virginian sweet or tart cherries for only $3.09/lb. or if you pick 10 lbs or more, the price is reduced to $2.79/lb.

So why should pay us a visit for these delectable treats? Not only are they fun to pick, but cherries are one of Mother Nature’s most prominent superfoods.

Set your Sights on this Superfood

Much like other fruits, cherries have huge health benefits. That being said, go ahead and let yourself indulge in a milkshake every once in a while…as long as it comes with a cherry on top!

There a quite a few reasons to keep a bowl of cherries on-hand in your fridge. Eating cherries will help to:

  1. protect against diabetes
  2. promote better sleep
  3. decrease belly fat
  4. reduce the risk of stroke
  5. reduce muscle pain
  6. relieve osteoarthritis

It’s Bittersweet

You may not be into the cherries to cut calories; maybe you’re looking for just the opposite: a sweet treat nobody can resist. If you have your family recipes, give our cherries a shot to add a little homegrown flavor. If you’re coming to the farm to pick, but need a little inspiration, check out one of our favorite guilty pleasures:

Cherry-Vanilla Crisp


  • 4 tbsps. unsalted butter
  • 6 cups pitted cherries (thaw if frozen)
  • ¾ cup sugar
  • 2 tbsps. dark rum
  • 2 tbsps. Vanilla extract
  • ½ tsp. ground cinnamon
  • pinch of salt
  • ¼ cup plus 2 tbsps. all-purpose flour
  • 2/3 cup rolled oats
  • 1/3 cup sliced almonds


  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. and butter a 9-inch square baking dish
  2. Toss the cherries in a large bowl with ½ cup sugar, the rum, vanilla, cinnamon, salt and 2 tablespoons flour. Transfer to the prepared baking dish.
  3. Whisk the remaining ¼ cup flour, the oats, almonds and the remaining ¼ cup sugar in a medium bowl. Stir in the melted butter until combined, then sprinkle the mixture over the cherries.
  4. Bake until the filling is bubbling and the topping is golden brown (50 minutes to 1 hour). Let cool slightly before serving.

We’re in the middle of May, and that means the good times are ready to roll. Our beautiful berries are hangin’ out on the vine, waiting to stain your fingers with their sugary goodness. Plus, in a few more days it’ll be Memorial Day—time to get the grills fired up and pile the picnic tables with all your cookout favorites.

The upcoming holiday is a time to remember those who’ve bravely served our country. As a way to thank our veterans for their service and members of the armed forces for their sacrifice, we offer a 10 percent discount daily when they show their military i.d.

Memorial Day is also a day to get together with friends and family and just be simple, soaking up the good company and sunshine. Those good-time gatherings fit right in with our mission to have an important role in our community. We love knowing that our produce and products find their way into your celebrations.

Farming takes a team effort—a big one! From planting season through harvest, we’re in it together here. Whether it’s cultivating crops or sharing a meal, one thing is obvious: Food brings us together. And that’s a very good—or berry good!—thing.

We’re happy we can provide produce and products from the market that you can take home and share at your Memorial Day cookouts. Here are just a few things you can pick up this in preparation for your celebrations:

  • Local steaks from Blonde Farm. Right out of Inwood, this local beef will be a grilling favorite!

  • Berries—of course! They’re sweet enough on their own, or dress them up however you like best—topped with whipped cream or in a decadent dessert.
  • Jams and jellies. These are great in desserts or marinades. You can also use them in oil-based dressings for pasta, veggie, or lettuce salads that need to stay fresh in hot weather.

To round out this week’s post, we’ll leave you with a quick and easy berry crumble recipe that’ll be a hit at your Memorial Day cookout:


Butter, for pan


2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice (about 1/2 large lemon)

1 1/2 tablespoons arrowroot flour

1 pound medium strawberries, halved

1 1/2 pounds yellow or white peaches, peeled, pitted and sliced* see Cook’s Note

1/2 cup light brown sugar


2/3 cup all-purpose flour

2/3 cup old fashioned style oats

1/2 cup sliced almonds

1/4 cup light brown sugar

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon fine sea salt

1 stick (1/2 cup) unsalted butter, chilled, cut into 1/2-inch cubes

Serving suggestion: whipped cream, vanilla ice cream or gelato

Put an oven rack in the center of the oven. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Butter an 8 by 8-inch glass baking dish. Set aside.

For the filling: In a medium bowl, whisk together the lemon juice and arrowroot until smooth. Add the strawberries, peaches and brown sugar. Gently toss until the fruit is coated. Pour the fruit mixture into the prepared pan.

For the topping: In the bowl of a food processor, combine the flour, oats, almonds, brown sugar, cinnamon, and sea salt. Pulse until mixed. Add the butter. Pulse until the butter is the size of peas. Sprinkle the mixture over the filling and bake for 40 to 45 minutes until the filling is bubbling and the top is light golden. Cool the crumble for 5 minutes.

Spoon the warm crumble into bowls and serve with a dollop of whipped cream or ice cream.

We hope you’re planning to visit the farm for pick-your-own strawberry season! This year we’ve planted two varieties, “Sweet Charlie” and “Chandler,” which will be available for about three weeks.  Bring the kids, grandma, grandpa—all are welcome. Picking is a fun family activity with a sweet ending!

Each year, we use our strawberries in all sorts of delicious ways. You can find many of our creations at the market, or you can enjoy the berries the old-fashioned way— plain and simple, piled up in a bowl or the palm of your hand. Of course strawberries and dessert are a perfect pair, but America’s favorite berry is quite the culinary traveler. If you haven’t gone beyond the traditional strawberry uses, it’s a must-do.  And if you need a little inspiration, we’ve got a few simple ideas to get you started.

  • Add sliced strawberries to your salad. Throw in your favorite nuts, some feta cheese, and a protein, like grilled chicken, fish, tofu, or beans.

The beginning of our harvest time reminds us of why we’re here. As farmers, our work has many components: We want to grow healthy crops, take good care of our land, and be productive members of our community.

We love what we do, and we truly enjoy sharing it with our visitors. By inviting the public to pick berries, shop our market of homemade goods, and take tours, we feel like we’re doing our part to encourage a better relationship between farm and community.  At Orr’s, there are a few ways that relationship comes full circle:
